Asking this on a Contractor forum is akin to asking who believes in God on an Atheist forum, what answer do you expect?

        a)Lots of permies here
b)Lots of contractors aren't "lifers" but in it due to employment or just the money

I agree, however on a contracting forum, I would assume, maybe wrongly, that the majority are contractors? If that assumption is wrong then I admit my point in no longer valid.

Incidently, I bet if you went to a permie forum you would get even more people telling him to go for the contract because it would seem like a no-brainer to a permie as they don't really know what contracting is all about and they just see the $$$$$$

What I'm actually surprised no-one has said is...."take the permy job for a year or two....the contract is six months and there aint a lot out there so you could quite easily be out of work for six months and more and end up with less money".

If you're any good then you'll always find work.

Maybe, but work (very) close to home is very important given impending sprog.

Go for the perm as it is close to home. Your missus will need support with the baby, at least until baby is in a routine and the missus is over the birth.
                    Good luck and congrats!
