More snow overnight (and now too) about 2 feet high in the front garden and on the drive.

Haven't been able to move the cars.

We cleared the drive 3 times in the last 24 hours but it's drifting quite badly.

Went to walk to the local shop yesterday evening - down the middle of the road, very quiet and still - no one around.

I've never been fully snowed in like this before, no way to get to the M1 - still billing but feeling a bit stir crazy.

Snow in the Hague the last few days; canal and ponds frozen and covered in snow.

In snow, no ABS is better. Locked wheels allow a build up of snow in front of them which will help slow you down quicker.

On ice, ABS just cuts in too quickly, although its ice , you're sliding, you're probably ****ed anyway! You need to brake before the ice, or before the potential for ice, so that when you are on the ice you've already slowed down to a safe speed.

My experience is you can brake on snow/ice but only very lightly obviously. I've always felt like ABS is just not sensitive enough, which seems to be the case.

The worst bit is when you join a main road from your residential side-street on a slight slope. Often the main road is clear but the side-street isn't. Not fun... at least when all roads are snowy people are aware of it.

I would say ABS and traction control make things safer without a doubt. ABS or not, you should brake and accelerate gently and in a straight line as much as possible. Using a higher gear helps as well. Personally now I've experienced them I wouldn't consider driving in snow and ice without winter tires any more than I would go for a walk in it in my lounge shorts.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

The point of ABS is to allow you to steer having slammed on the brakes in panic, and on ice you can't steer anyway. A good driver can outbrake ABS in all conditions because the maximum stopping force is before the ABS cuts in. On ice, at best ABS acheives nothing because it removes all the braking force as soon as you touch the brakes.
