The story of Noah is in many ancient texts and religions. It obviously has a basis in fact somewhere.

Who knows. An "average" Christian is very hard to define. Certainly some people believe it is 100% literal but then some people believe the world was literally created in a few days, and fossils are some sort of weird joke.

Those who believe the OT is essentially holding historical recordings from long, long ago can certainly find a not inconsistent reading that there was a flood in that case some sort of Ark isn't illogical. Translating ancient languages isn't an exact science and the people writing didn't know what "the whole earth" was at the time, or what "every species" entailed.

I think a considered Christian view is the exact details are not the most important part, but that Noah himself was real and played an important role. Few pieces of history 5000 years ago are known fully, after all.
Personally, it doesn't really matter to me how big the boat was or exactly what the deal was with the animals, etc.
