Thinking about it, maybe stories passed by word of mouth are more accurate. If you had a vested interest in pedddling some particular line, you might spend more time polishing a written account you thought would survive than if you were simply telling a story you knew would be subject to variation due to error.

Perhaps some believer can explain it to me. I promise not to laugh. (Much)
The Jehovah of the old testament was Christ of the new testaments dad. Or something.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

maybe the Black Sea deluge theory

(although, reading that article, opinion seems more divided than I thought)

edit: Oops, just seen your reply that mentions the same idea

The story itself probably pre dates all those texts and was woven in to each of them.
As for being based in fact... The flood, maybe, the details of the ark, probably not. The story, like many that would have been told orally would have had a strong moral purpose in teaching the listeners about being prepared, fearing god and acted as a warning that if he could do it once then he could do it again.
At that time, natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, droughts, plagues and pestilence would have been civilisation changing events

I didn't know they had strong opinions on the matter. But then, I don't really know what their doctrine is other than not celebrating Christmas and birthdays.

I have only once ever had JWs come round, even though they have a meeting room across the street from where I live they never visit. Obviously not trying hard enough.
