That was deliberate - it was a reply of his to your point - I was trying to kill two birds with one stone (if a little inelegantly). The point stands though - you seemed aggrieved that I'd been talking about claiming dole a couple of weeks ago after just finishing a contract. It wasn't me who'd done this (I've been in contract the last few weeks) - it was, I think, RC, and besides which if you're paid via an umbrella co it's all perfectly legit.

I see problems with this. Can you really expect people to turn out, on time, and do a quality job for state handouts they have been receiving for years for doing frak all? Also, in a heartbeat you can bet the Sun will find some immigrants living in a 6 bed mansion on state handouts that are exempt from the ruling and whip people into a frenzy.

It's inevitable. The poor that live in 'the city' were always going to be the victims, they have no money = no power. Easy targets.

Interestingly a lot of the blame has been assigned to the bankers, that may well be, but I don't think there all to blame.

The country's GDP beyond the manufacturing era is dependant on one city = London = fail

The UK's wealth generation should be spread throughout the land, like Germany perhaps where the financial centre is Frankfurt and the politics out of Berlin.

The governments throughout the years have had ample opportunity to exercise and limit the growth of a city. But no each successive government panders to the city like it's the most precious thing on earth. Makes me sick.

Actually you really are right in a way. Barbs and insults are one thing, and are quickly forgotten (or should be). I've seen you take enough flak and keep soldiering on. But I won't forget the tulip who brought family into the discussion. Even if I ignore him on this board (to keep things civilised).

Back to the subject rather than all the self-indulgent personal bickering.

Action to prevent people ending up in long term welfare dependency is a worthwhile objective - I guess we're all agreed on that. Where we seem to part company is between those who feel people who won't work (and that in itself is going to difficult to establish a fair test for) should be cast adrift/murdered/fed to the dogs and those who feel some worthwhile help/options should exist.

It is an interesting question as to what would happen if we abolished all or most of the welfare state. I personally have serious doubts whether all those wasters, workshy fops, junkies, alcoholics and petty criminals currently using benefits to survive or as a supplement to cash in hand an/or theiving would suddenly wake up and think, "fair enough, off I go to the job centre to peruse the fabulous range of work on offer for a person like me". That said, I have no idea what they would do.

The people I take issue with here the most are those who do seem to advocating a return to the workhouse (albeit updated a bit). It is one of my abiding memories of a time I was profoundly despairing of some aspects of humanity when I found that some people in Victorian workhouses were made to turn hand cranks all day. The cranks didn't do anything except prevent people being "idle" - that kind of dogmatic attitude doesn't seem so far off amongst some on here.
