What not even anything about the First Anglo-Afghan War in the 1840s?Originally posted by zeitghostHow to Lose a War: More Foolish Plans and Great Military Blunders: Amazon.co.uk: Bill Fawcett: Books
Oddly, there's not much mention of Afghanistan.
Classic military cock-up if ever there was one.

Just finished Congo;A History by David van Reybrouck. It's in Dutch and the English translation comes out early next year. It's about DRC and starts before the Belgians arrived and goes right through the rubber terror, the first and second world wars, independence, Mobutu, Kabila Sr and up to 2010 under Kabila jr, who is a bit of a tyrant, but probably the least tulipty of all the rulers up to now. Brilliant; a history book that reads like a good novel. Good job too as there's 600 pages of it.And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014Comment

just finished "the thin red line" by james jones. read it many times and will read it again... now onto "nelson: the sword of albion" by john sugden. it's the sequel to his outstanding "nelson: a dream of glory." i've been waiting in great anticipation for this one and if it's anything like the first it will be in the running for top non-fiction book of the year.Comment

We can't be sure of that - For all we know the one-eyed muppet may have been a godsend for the security services, allowing them to infiltrate hordes of double agents into terrorist cells and training camps both in the UK and abroad, in a masterly campaign.Originally posted by zeitghosthttp://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Suicide-.../dp/0007234694
Remarkable.
The inadequacies of the British State security apparatus exposed for all to see.
After all, there haven't been any bombings for some years now have there?Work in the public sector? Read the IR35 FAQ hereComment

I'm working my way through the Harry Bosch series, in a few years of train commuting I've done quite a lot of the detective stuff and Michael Connelly is one of the better authors that I haven't ODed on yet. I'm due for something a bit more highbrow
