Seconded, and there's some good hiking to be had in and around the Cairngorms.

Too touristy. Head west coast. Avoid Ben Nevis unless you want to see a fat lass from stoke walking her dogs while eating crisps "climbing the highest mountain" on the way to a heart attack.

As someone said earlier the rural spots are the best. Less twats. And I'm scottish! Try crinan, applecross, glencoe for starters.

I think the English Tourist Board is missing a trick and should erect a huge hoarding by the side of the A74 & A1 heading North, advising English tourists to visit somewhere their custom will be welcomed
