I was just offered a really good job at £70K. The role was EMEA manager of a large OEM, was constant European travel and selling your soul. Could be a good longterm opportunity. But by the time you run the calculators across it, it's not worth it. It offered 5 weeks holiday, I could take home the same contracting and only have to work 34 weeks on an average rate!

    It just dont make sense
Yes it does. You're a contractor who is currently massively overpaid for your skills and responsibilities.

    Like most of us.

Yes, but when you factor in skills/responsibilities & flexibility it's pretty fair.

Skills, flexibility & low cost - pick any two.

Yup, you pay more for temps.

If a client has a permanent requirement, they should hire a permie - it costs a lot less.

Not even that. I can only type 60wpm. Real temps can type much faster.

                Yup. No argument there.

If you're going to go from Contractor to Permy then you'll have to make adjustments - some can, most can't.

The Contractor, the major ones will be lack of flexibility and drop in income, obviously.

Still, if you're lucky then initial salary won't be your main driving force.

I had forgotten at how different contracting was.

Contracting is all about skills. Period.
Perm is about experience and fitting in.

On my perm role, I moved quickly up in clientco because the company was diverse and in hyper growth. That way I didnt get bored and was also able to rely on my skillset. If IT didnt have bandwidth to get a point solution up and running quickly to help the sales org, I wrote it for phase 1 and then used that as a prototype for them to deliver phase II in 6 months.

Having spent some time looking for a similar perm role, most bore me rigid. I got an offer for one at a really cool company, but then I tried to negotiate for a higher salary(after they had offered it to me), they decided that they didnt want a more experienced manager & down graded the job by another £10k instead!!!

I find though, I dont really have the interest to keep learning new IT skills.
What happens in General, stays in General.
You know what they say about assumptions!
