Post of the day. Especially like the footnote that it is atmospheric pressure that starts it off, but the pressures soon equalize.Down with racism. Long live miscegenation! -
I think atmospheric pressure does more than start it off - You need atmospheric pressure to prevent the a portion of fluid from the highest point of the siphon simply parting from the rest and falling out.
I doubt if van der Waals forces are enough to hold the fluid together.
So the pedant may be wrong, or not entirely correct, himself.
(or maybe I'm wrong)
