I think atmospheric pressure does more than start it off - You need atmospheric pressure to prevent the a portion of fluid from the highest point of the siphon simply parting from the rest and falling out.

I doubt if van der Waals forces are enough to hold the fluid together.

So the pedant may be wrong, or not entirely correct, himself.

(or maybe I'm wrong)

Post of the day. Especially like the footnote that it is atmospheric pressure that starts it off, but the pressures soon equalize.
