Any recommendations for decent 'real' cider that can be found on supermarket shelves?
Morrisons and Sainsburys seem to have a good range of ciders, but some seem brewed just to be strong, and therefore lacking in taste. If you're having a few beers with friends, it would be much less if it was cider at double the percentage!
I'd like to try real 'scrumpy', but the only easy accessible brand is Westons, who produce the 4litre cloudy scrumpy in the token glass bottle. Anybody tasted that stuff? It's £4 a bottle at the minute, but I imagine it tastes more like pee than real scrumpy.
I wasn't that impressed by Aspalls, it didn't seem to have a great depth of taste, just high percentage of alcohol.
There's a local CAMRA brewery, but given that focusses on ale, there's not much except real ale to find around my way. The only cider on offer is strongbow, and that's not even cider.Comment

5.83 Cider duty rates will increase by 10 per cent above inflation on 29 March 2010 to bring them more into line with the duty rates on other alcohol products. From 1 September 2010, the technical definition of cider will be changed to ensure products that more closely resemble made-wines are taxed appropriately. No changes will be made to the structure of cider duty but this will be kept under review.
5.84 As announced at Budget 2008, alcohol duty rates on beer, wine and spirits will increase by 2 per cent above inflation on 29 March 2010. This will add 2 pence to the price of a pint of beer, 10 pence to the price of a bottle of wine, and 36 pence to the price of a bottle of spirits. In addition, alcohol duty rates on all products will increase by 2 per cent above inflation each year to 2014-15.

CAMRA does have a guide to cider and perry which can be found here:
