No. Germany was in a dreadful state in the 20's due to massive reparation payments imposed by the victors at the end of WW1. Right from the start Hitler used violence to achieve political aims including the murder of political opponents and the beating up of Jews and others. Nazism was never particularly successful economically, but what it did do was restore Germans respect for themselves by reneging on the reparation payments, by rea-arming contrary to the Versailles treaty, and by recovering territories ceded at the end of WW1 to neighbouring countries. And of course they used rhetoric and pageantry to inspire people. Envy hatred and bigotry was central to Nazism from the very beginning and was a core element of its so-called philosophy. One good element that was successful was the idea of working hard though Hitler himself was somewhat lazy and disorganised contrary to the stereotypical idea of Germans!Originally posted by Jabberwocky
As an aside a significant reason for the success of the German army was the ability of commanders in the field to take decisions independent of the central command. In other words it was not centrally controlled, but more democratic. Interestingly the Israeli army (and I believe the pre-independence terror groups such as Higana) were modelled on the Nazi model. That is one significant reason they were able to defeat the inefficient badly managed Arab armies in 1948, 1967 and so on. This is a nice illustration of why independence will triumph over central control e.g. socialism.
If you are to comment on history, then it helps to know at least a little but of what you are talking about rather than the cliches presumably learnt from Hollywood films.

Sensible and accurate post by Fleetwood in my opinion.
I was no fan of Thatcher as I believe in social freedom as well as economic freedom and she was no libertarian. Also, she took far too much power back to central government. In a democracy you should not just strip powers from an elected body like the GLC just because you don't like it. He may have been a lefty but Livingstone had a few sound ideas back then.
That said, what she did to end abuse of union power, particularly secondary action, was totally necessary. Similarly with the Falklands; the justification in real legal terms was total and although the cost was out of proportion to the importance of that dependency*, sometimes you have to make a stand to avoid future problems. Somebody steals your wallet with £5 in it? Big deal! If you can, you still break their nose to prevent it happening again.
*Unimportant that is, assuming that later governments never have the guts to exploit the natural resources around it. Thatcher would have.bloggoth

Quite a shame really, I love a good political argument (I even got someone on the Grauniad message board to admit I had a good point once during a discussion on the subject of illegal immigration controls) but the lefties nowadays demonstrate all the wit and intellect of a bunch of BNPers on a weekend paki-bashing outing (apologies for using that term).
