Some blocks of flats in Earls Court have a lift which only goes to the top floor if the owner of the flat occupying the whole top floor inserts a key, and then they can step practically straight into their sitting room. How cool is that?

I'd expect to be able to lock the lift in situ upon arrival at my penthouse, thereby forcing the peasantry below to use the stairs and saving me a wait when I wanted to go out again

It's what I do, but unfortunately I'm a semi-recluse and don't go out for days on end.

It seems to me, *every* lift in America (if all the movies I've seen are to be believed), have a 'stop' button or switch, which will stop the thing mid-floor, for a barney or some romance to take place.

I've never seen a stop button in a lift!
