I find wearing a tie to be a very silly thing to do. Its purpose is to hide the fact that your buttons are arranged so that you can do them up, meaning you cannot afford a gentleman's gentleman to do it for you. It is now a silly, pointless item.

Fashion in clothes in the workplace seems to have stalled this past 70 years, unlike most of history. Provided what you wear keeps you warm and dry and hides the naughty bits, what difference does it make?

Around here, many of the blokes wear the clothes they wore in the Indian or Asian countries they come from; they look an awful lot like ladies' PJs with a frock over the top. But I won't say that to the face of one of them - I'll be duffed up.

I also dare anyone to wander up to a Scot in a kilt and call him a transvestite.

What we wear and consider to be normal is all just cultural.


The objection to transvestitism is based in the perceived threat that wearer is making to society's conventions and a fear the individual will embarrass us. When I was younger I also had a hatred of 'pooftas'; at one point I had a colleague who started coming in to work in a floral frock and make up. He looked absolutely ridiculous and was humiliated and slapped around a bit. Now I am older, wiser and more secure in the knowledge of my sexuality, I look back and find that young bloke's confusion a bit sad - he was just trying to work out who and what he was.

And if I see a bloke these days in a skirt my reaction would be "So you're out to shock. I lived through the punk era mate and you haven't got a clue."


There was a cracking radio play about a family man in middle age who gets caught dressed up; it was hilarious and sad. (The woman from the Oxo ads was the wife and the husband was an actor whose name I cannot recall but he's a very blokey bloke.) It did a good job of explaining one reason behind how a heterosexual bloke feels the need to dress up. Not my cup of tea but I do realise seeing some bloke in a frock does not harm me either.
