Why did the test not include questions like:

My wife failed the test miserably and her family comes from Wales. So WTF are they going to send her?

My wife had to do this test and I took the practice test and failed as well. I am not British by birth anyway but I got all the questions about the New Deal, benefits and stuff like that wrong.

The questions are droll, but it does implicitly enforce a knowledge of English for citizenship as to pass the test without being able to speak English would be difficult.

To be fair its an improvement compared to when I got my citizenship. My application was originally held up as I hadn't provided enough proof of my ability to communicate effectively in English. So I had to provide a shoebox full of tulip documentation with a covering letter stating that based on my employment history and the fact that the language of instruction of my schooling and tertiary education was English, that it was most unlikely that I could not speak it.

Then when I went for my citizenship ceremony, one of other ladies recieving citizenship was offered the services of an interpreter as she could not speak English.

For those of you that dont know, it has got a hell of a lot tougher and expensive to get English citizenship. On any immigration related matter I would not go near the home office these days without an immigration lawyer. The whole process is very complex and protracted and they will nail you to the wall and pummell you with any inconsistencies you have in your documentation. The average pile of documentation for leave to remain thesedays will be at least 2 inches thick. And you should not expect to get much change out of 3.5K for the whole naturalisation process.
