Many moons ago I had a Morris Minor which never got stuck in the snow. The skinny tyres plus a couple of flagstones and some bags of sand in the boot helped.Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away. -

My driving skills are not in question. What's in question is the Golf's tendency to lose the back end even at the slowest speeds (all tyres are less than a month old as well).
I think it may be the a combination of harder suspension and make-up of the tyres. they are rather a hard composite.
