A reminder of just how fortunate we are to have positioned ourselves as we have
The equivelant of 30k 14 years ago wouldn't buy you much now would it? And how much did you sell that for? If it was more and I am assuming it was. Why was that, was it the expert way you marketted the house, or something else on your part. No it was luck. Prices went up. Luck that simple. And that got you on your way. That is not a bad thing, I am not knocking you (or me for that matter) but it is perhaps not a reason backpats.
Today to buy a entry level home in some parts of the country costs around 150k. How long do you expect people to save? Maybe that is why they are at home, so that they can save?
Also why are you calling me backend. Is it just to be rude. No real call for that. I haven't been rude to you, quiet the opposite. Would you please extend me the same courtesy. Standards old boy.
how much did i sell it for ? 32k, it was sold on again in 2006 for 115k
how long do I expect people to save ? everyone is different. Thank God I am a contractor
why did I call you backend ? esp considering you have not been rude - dunno must be my imminent dotage

Every day is the same, and the weeks of his life merge into years, I can see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice.
And I think Thank God I am a Contractor
That's the bit that makes me thank god I am a contractor too.
I did a five-year contract once, very cosy it was, but at the end of it I couldn't remember much difference between one year and the next. A large chunk of my life parcelled up together and filed away as "getting by".
I'd forgotten how to look for work, my contacts had disappeared, and my CV wasn't great because after five years it had cobwebs.
So I made up my mind to move about more and I did. I even threw up a six-month extension after 3 months at a blue chip for a one-monther doing something else, similar money.
Having said all that, I've been at the same place for nearly two years now while the market is low.
When I graduated in 1998 a typical graduate starting salary was about 18-25k and the average house was just under 100k. Save for a year and borrow a couple of k from the parents and a 22 year old grad could easily get the average house with a 4x mortgage.
Today a typical graduate starting salary is about 18-25k and the average house is up at about 165k...

Are try to get a mortgage for less than 25% deposit.
