    It doesn't matter if they are in a line or not - the situation is that A is looking at B and B is looking at C. Even if C is looking at A, it's irrelevant.

        I think that's probably because the higher the IQ, the fewer assumptions you're inclined to make, and therefore the less determinate the solution.

                I saw the problem on the Cosmic Variance physics blog yesterday.

                Many, if not most, of the comments are scientists (who one assumes are reasonably smart) 'fessing up one after another that they jumped to the wrong conclusion. So we're in good company.
