I saw the problem on the Cosmic Variance physics blog yesterday.

Many, if not most, of the comments are scientists (who one assumes are reasonably smart) 'fessing up one after another that they jumped to the wrong conclusion. So we're in good company.

Ah, I've just got it. Very good.

I wet myself with the strain of thinking about it though.

A high IQ is a positive hindrance to answering this question correctly.

edit: But of course that's not to say those who do get the right answer must be stupid!
    Nice one. Got any more?

    I'm dead fick, me.

I think that's probably because the higher the IQ, the fewer assumptions you're inclined to make, and therefore the less determinate the solution.

It doesn't matter if they are in a line or not - the situation is that A is looking at B and B is looking at C. Even if C is looking at A, it's irrelevant.

    RH is right.

EO - you're making an assumption too far with married man... it says person. I was assuming they were all facing in the same direction, in a line.

    Jack > Anne > AndyW

If Jack=Married and AndyW=Unmarried, and Anne=Either Married or unmarried, then:

    If Anne=Married:
    J(M) > A(M) > AW (U)

Anne is looking at AndyW, so a married person is looking at an unmarried person.

    If Anne=Unmarried:
    J(M) > A(U) > AW (U)

Jack is looking at Anne, so, again, a married person is looking at an unmarried person.
