Thanks for all the flaming - have to admit, I wasn't quite ready for so much. I put my hands up - fair dues. Sorry to have asked so many questions. It's just that if I look for answers to each one in turn the answers all seem interdependant. I was hioping to get answers to the whole situation, but I appreciate it's a bit much to ask of strangers.
Thanks though, especially for the serious replies:
First do you know this company well / have you done a credit check?
Payment terms?
For me it's
Get the work
Get paid for the work
Let the accountant sort out the tax.
Hmmmm. Yes, that is a bit of a worry. I know the guy recruiting me, and he's a good bloke. I know less about the company but they're semi-public funded, and have just poured a lot of money into the department where I'd be working, so I think it should be fine for a couple of years at least. It's sort of a troubleshooting recruiting. You're right though, at the moment I do have waves of doubt about leaving a secure (well, still locum - on PAYE - but seemingly secure) position for the unknown...
If the bloke is amenable, why don't you just go the sole-trader route. Much less hassle, and he most likely won't be away of possibility of being liable for your Tax & NI if you don't pay it.
[I don't know. I'm clueless about this stuff. The new boss seems to think we need to go through an agency (he suggested we look at "Direct Temping" who apparently charge 9%). I'm not sure if this is necessary and hope to persuade him that we can go through a limited company I set up instead. That is, if I have understood what I have read so far.
