My money is on a combination of

    Old shoes
    Pushing too hard
    Not stretching

If you've got a gym nearby with a plunge pool, go and sit in it for as long as you can stand.

I loved running , about the same age as you + 1 year.

Havent run for 4 months, recovering from a slipped disc which was progressive after running my whole life on hard surfaces. Second time its happened

          Bottom line

Running actually fcks your body up. Hips , back, knees etc and IMO your age now is about time to start doing exercises like swimming, biking, walking etc and gym to keep bone density.

I really enjoyed running but its time to adapt and accept I am not 20 something anymore and need to think about long term issues with back and hips etc

You will get fit again if you carry on running and you will get through the pain but IMHO , its time to stop high impact exercise unless you want serious issues in old age.

This is a personal , not medical opinion so take with a pinch of salt

Oh so younger than me (just).

Now I simply don't like you.

Only joking, I do a lot of running and I would agree that a good pair of shoes is the way to go. I always go ASICS
Faster, faster, faster, until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death.

Patience is something you admire in the driver behind you and scorn in the one ahead.

I must admit I used to think the same - that running fecks you up long term. Almost everyone I know that runs has joint problems etc. But the medical peeps seem to say differently. Nevertheless I try to avoid it, not least because it's incredibly boring.

The medical peeps say the same - running is bad for joints

However the health benefits from the exercise that running provides outweigh the damage it does.

If you look further I think you'll find loads of recent papers that suggest running does not damage joints. That was what I discovered last time I looked anyway.
