Are CV's ever checked, as it seems entirely possibly to blag one's way through a short term job with the kind help of colleagues and some books from Amazon

This one sort of hits the nail on the head. Sometimes with the right buzzwords and the ability to talk the talk you can land jobs well above your station. The thing with your ex seems that he is able to blag at a very high level.

I have recruited before and admit to not checking references. If you find someone is totally not up to standard then they are quick and easy to get rid of. He has been able to do what he has done as he is obviously a good blagger and knows that 99% of his time he will not be reference checked, even at this high level.

Without tattooing "FAKE" on his forehead or locking him up permanently he is likely to carry on doing this IMO.

Is there a book that says that?
What statuate does that come under?
Is there case law and what is the case?

In my sector, word soon gets around about who's good and who's bad. Never found an out-and-out fake yet.
