You're right, it's all done and dusted. He's in prison, there'll be a splash in the papers and the internet for a while, and I'm back to getting on with my life.

However, his predominant hunting ground is places like this and other forums, but particularly in your industry. It's his means, and after he's released from prison I don't see anything changing. He will be back, true to form and whilst he has every right to earn a living and live in peace, I believe the lengths he will go to reconstruct his life will be in proportion to his desperation.

I believe he's mentally ill, I also believe he can't be cured. The sad thing is he is very intelligent, and could probably be very good at what ever profession he applied himself to, if he were capable of attending to something for longer than a whim.

I'd say the threat of prosecution for fraud would mean that 90% don't bother to do much other than acceptably exaggerate their CVs, as most people tend to, to create a specific impression.

However, I've seen some right royal guff on CVs that have been passed to me by agents who clearly have no clue about the market/profession. I've even outed someone as a liar in a (curtailed) telephone interview after giving him the benefit of the doubt, and several chances to come clean.

But, if the interviewers and the agent don't know the candidate's subject matter, it's probably easy to beat the system and lie your way in. There's a big difference between lying and blagging though - I have no problem with a X dev saying he can do Y technology, and swotting up on it before the start date. It shows adaptability, resourcefulness.

Often, if a good developer has the principles mastered, they can turn their hand to many technologies. Just so long as the work gets done to an agreed standard within agreed timescales, I don't care.

The 'screening' bit is left to HR folks. They usualy have tiers of clearance, from simply credit-checking them, to the full reference-credit-convictions faff. Most won't go to this trouble for a 3 month contract.

It also depends how niche your sector specialism is. For mine, it's a relatively small market - where you bump into the same people at conferences, where people have heard of you, and you'd be an idiot to mess people about.


Off-topic: I'm speaking about these things from experience & principles, and not making any implications about the person you refer to. I'd be careful you don't start slandering/libelling people who are known IRL on this board, criminal conviction, ex-husband or otherwise. We know where that leads.

Us code monkeys are often given technical tests at, or prior to, interview. If these are online tests it is possible to cheat (but quite hard ).

Yes, and in fairness he isn't here to defend himself. My original question is something that has bugged me for a while now, and I'm grateful for someone explaining how it works. I never could understand why he wasn't gripped at some point going from job to job with all that was out there about him. In my profession you can't simply change your name as your name is your reputation.
