This kind of mindless/fckwitted reporting really annoys me.

The prof has presumably written a peer-reviewed paper that has been published in a respected journal somewhere? Any mention of the source in the Daily Wail? No. Why I wonder?
The language they use - "The findings challenge atheists such as Richard Dawkins..."
Errr, no they don't - the bloke wrote a very interesting book in which he shot himself in the foot (in a non scientific, non peer-reviewed stylee) several times. (I'm assuming they are referring to The God Delusion)

If you read the Wail article it is confused and contradictory (no tulip Sherlock). I mean WTF is this last paragraph all about

'We are evolved creatures and the whole point about humanity is that we are rooted in the natural world.''"

I rather thought the point of the article/research was to suggest that religious belief is hardwired into us?

So are a lot of things - many of which we filter out because they are stupid and inappropriate. Why can't Religious tossers just stick to their own pathetic god-bothering without involving the rest of us? Because, ultimately, they are crapping themselves that the rest of us might be right.

For my part - if (and it's a big if) there is a god, I don't want to have anything to do with him if the best representatives he has to convince us of his existence is a gang of intolerant toss artists.

I spent half my childhood with my head under my covers (thanks largely to my bastard older brother who liked scaring me with horrible stories) but 13 years of Catholicism scarcely penetrated at all. Never had any capacity to believe anything I can't see evidence for.

Re Timberwolf's comment, there is a big difference between being scared of things that go bump in the night and having religion. The former might be natural (it aids survival to assume that any unknown situation has hidden dangers) but religion is much more than that, it is an organised thing that is imposed on us.

It has always been about domination, the leaders made the religious rules to reinforce the earthly ones that keep the rest of us in check and our parents pass it on because they themselves were indoctrinated. Religious belief solves no problems and is possibly an impediment to rational solutions.

Not all religions are that organised, Catholicism is one of the more sophisticated ones. Granted religions have evolved to serve more than to explain things that go bump in the night.
