Less than two weeks after it was announced that British Council civil service jobs were to be “outsourced” to India, it has emerged that the Government also intends to outsource sensitive tax processing work at HM Revenue and Customs to that nation as well.
The proposals form part of a Government plan to cut costs by £205 million a year under a project code named “Quantum.” News of the cuts were revealed in a recent issue of the magazine Computer Weekly.
A leaked memo to HMRC staff from the Public and Commercial Services Union Capgemini group said that the Quantum project included looking at the “potential off-shoring of some future work.”
Capgemini, which employs 18,000 of its 92,000 employees in India, has offices in Chennai (Madras), Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata (Calcutta), Bangalore and Mumbai. How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't thinkComment
