1)Those unemployed were only unemployed recently, so your figure is meaningless. Employment has been high until recently.
2)Pensioners are always complaining about something. Too hot, too cold, too poor, too many blacks these days... if they had saved up under a Tory government they'd be able to weather this recession just fine.

Those are who were helped by a Labour government.
The point I was trying to make was that there is no one solution to the problems in society, and it is ludicrous to pretend that there is.
There are solutions, and the first is to give the poor a sense of self worth and self esteem. If they cannot achieve academic success why not at least teach them to read and write in schools with small classes and decent teachers. Give them access to sport, drama and music and find what each and everyone is good at. As I have said before, If every child had an education with teachers and facilities that are enjoyed by the top scools in this country then the savings we would make in welfare, health and police would more than pay the cost of sending them to Eton.

Make the minimum wage about £10/hour.

Or abolish income tax below 20k, HMRC and DSS could be dramatically slimmed down in the process.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Unemployment has been very high if you include the non-jobs, those wrongly on disability benefits and the students sent to uni to keep them off the dole, and this will exacerbate the levels over the next few years as these hidden figures come to the fore.

Hahahah... so pensioners have no right to complain if they have paid into a company scheme for 40 years and then find that they have no decent pension because Gordon has killed private sector pay-linked pensions since 1997. You're avin a larf !!

Getting a bit off topic, but presumably there is going to be high unemployment in the coming years and public sector spending cuts. What will this mean for house prices?

You assume I'm a left-winger - why? You assume I claim the moral high ground - why? I don't have a political position, I'm asking why a political viewpoint is viewed in the same way as a religious belief.

... because many northerners are obviously preached politics by their parents, and this has built up an irrational hatred of an icon in Thatcher, with no regard to the damage that the unions inflicted on the rest of us.

I have actually formed my own opinions, borne out by the fact that I have totally different beliefs in what is best for our failing country to those of most of the people that I know, especially my close family, and I thus avoid getting into political discussions with them. I must admit though that after 12 years of Labour I get the vibes that they are realising they made a big mistake.
