WHS. I was self employed in Spain for 2 years. I had to wade through the mountain of bureaucracy myself as you'd expect, using spanish speaking friends to help until I could do it myself. No options for other languages, no translations services, no free spanish classes no nothing which is how it should be. You adapt to the country you're living in rather than it adapting to you.The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven -
Great thread - especially the "half a bigot" spot!
Be good to see these English Democrats (Motto: Putting England First) gain more positions of power. Would guarantee the break-up of the UK.
Speaking gibberish on internet talkboards since last Michaelmas. Plus here on TwitterComment

I may not be homosexual but I'm certainly not homophobic!Originally posted by threaded View PostAnyways, why are Bogeyman and Churchill so hung up about this new mayor of Doncaster: is it his manifesto pledge to cancel the gay pride march, or judging by the way they struggle with the language: the translation services?
I think we should have a celebration of hetero-pride here in the North West!

Not sure about the no free language classes.Originally posted by ookook View PostWHS. <SNIP> no free spanish classes no nothing which is how it should be. You adapt to the country you're living in rather than it adapting to you.
If we do not give the new arrivals (v. neutral term) a leg up then we will always be giving them a hand out.
Ignore the reason why they are here. That is in the past. Give them the tools to become tax payers and English is a prerequisite for living and working in England."All around me I see chaos and confusion, my work here is done...."Comment

OK apply the same rules to students. Give them a student loan to learn English and once they start earning they pay it back.Originally posted by bren586 View PostNot sure about the no free language classes.

People have no respect for anything that is "free", I am afraid your attitude is patronising (to immigrants). Afford them the same respect we have for our students.Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyoneComment

If you make it a loan then they will have a reason not to do it. Also don't some regions prohibit borrowing money with interest? or is it just lending it?
In no way was I intending to be patronising - I just want a system that works (in a few lines).
If they learn English then they can go into the mainstream instead of being marginalised.
At some point we have to do something for them. To start them off."All around me I see chaos and confusion, my work here is done...."Comment

It was the same for me in Germany. I had to learn the language in order to understand official forms etc. Our HMG are just trying to win votes from ethnic minorities in marginal seats. It should stop !!

<ahem>Bollocks</ahem>It is up to them. Pure and simple. They have chosen to come to the UK they have to make adjustments to their lives to fit in and do well.Originally posted by bren586 View PostIf you make it a loan then they will have a reason not to do it. Give me one example of giving people something for nothing does them any good.Originally posted by bren586 View PostIf you make it a loan then they will have a reason not to do it. Also don't some regions prohibit borrowing money with interest? or is it just lending it?

Life is simple. If they dont learn the language they dont get on. People need to take responsibility for themselves. One of my favourite examples applies to contractors. We all know what a bunch of nerdy couched potato real ale drinking slobs you all are yet in terms of days off for sickness you are the healthiest group of workers in the country.
Why? because you dont get paid for taking time off for sickness.. funny that.
If someone couldnt feed themselves because they couldnt speak the local lingo they would learn PDQLet us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyoneComment
