It really is a no-brainer. If you can't be bothered to learn the language - leave. And yes that goes for brits living abroad too.
And the fact that there are those who think that opinion makes me a bigot says far more about them than it does about me.
I am one of those Brits.
I would generaly agree, but, when my expertise is required then I would expect the company who needs me to make allowances.
I do get annoyed when I compare the UK to other EU nations I have visited. If I have to deal with local authorities or businesses they (quite rightly) expect me to speak their language. If I do not then it is up to me to provide a translator at my expense.
My local Council in the UK has just set up a translation service for the Polish community FFS. Works out about 6K per Pole. I wonder how many other communities my Council tax is supporting whilst they withdraw funding for lang standing community projects and festivals.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

Step back, have a think and adjust my own own attitude from time to time
In the vibrant multi-lingual country of Canada you can only expect service in French or English (if you're lucky). Everybody else is expected to learn one of those languages. I've never come across any translation services for any other languages...people get along and people still get services.
But then, I suppose, there's always more chance there that someone in the office will speak their language than here. Or they bring a friend to translate..simple solution don't you think?
McCoy: "Medical men are trained in logic." Spock: "Trained? Judging from you, I would have guessed it was trial and error."
It's a good start. Doncaster council tax payers will save a fortune and a lot of non-jobs will go. I'm very impressed that he has reduced his salary to
30K. No wonder the unions are worried !!
Hopefully, this agenda will spread through the UK.
I am slightly unnerved by the enthusiasm with which he flaunts his Daily Mail and Racing Post on the desk in that BBC clip.
& I liked the bit on his post-election interview when he admitted having no idea how much Gay Pride cost or brought in to the town; also the bit where he calls the Guardian the Manchester Guardian (well, it only changed its name 50 years ago).

I can understand your doubts as we are all aware of the outstanding intelligence and fantastic grasp of all detail that Labour guys have.
