Outrage at Iran president
By DANNY BRIERLEY
THE new president of Iran last night called for Israel to be “wiped off the map”.
Firebrand Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s remark outraged Western leaders.
It came after months of pressure from America and Europe aimed at curbing the Islamic nation’s race for nuclear weapons.
The Foreign Office branded the comment “sickening” and the US said it showed the “true views and intentions” of Iran.
Ahmadinejad, 49, was speaking at a conference called The World without Zionism.
He called Israel a “disgraceful blot” on the Islamic world. In a chilling reminder of the days of Iran’s former militant leader Ayatollah Khomeini, he added: “Israel must be wiped off the map.”
His audience of 3,000 hardline students in Tehran chanted: “Death to Israel” and “Death to America”. The war-mongering remark came as a bombing in Israel wrecked hopes of peace talks with the Palestinians.
At least five people died when a suicide bomber struck a market in Hadera. Iran already has the Shahab-3 ballistic missile, capable of hitting Israel or US bases in the Gulf.
Tehran claims it needs atomic fuel for power stations. But the US is convinced it is trying to make nuclear weapons.
The White House stormed last night: “It underscores the concerns we have about Iran’s nuclear intentions.”
France, Spain and other Western countries joined the protest by furiously summoning Tehran’s envoys.
Iran’s last leader Mohammad Khatami, who stepped down earlier this year, was less hostile to Israel and the West.

Well we have heard it from the horse's mouth. What say the tree huggers now? We sit idly by while Iran develops nukes?
