Not when you take into account the bundled minutes, texts and unlimited data. It's not cheap I'll grant you, but it's not a ripoff either. You can get it on PAYG now as well.

I only want minimal telephone functionality, but WIFI web browsing and email appeals. As would would built in Sat. Nav. and other applications. I imagine the iPod Touch is the one that would suit me best. A bit pricey though.
iPod Touch would definetly give you minimal phone functionality!

I would say the 18 month minimum contract is a pain, plus the fact it's currently only available on O2.
Those 2 facts nearly stopped me getting an iPhone, but in the end I got it and I'm glad I did.
I've had one for a couple of months now and I like it. The 2 major downsides for me are battery life and the camera (2Mpx, no flash etc). The plus points are that I don't bother carrying an iPod anymore and the web browser is the best I've used on a phone.
For me the main thing I like about it is that it's just a pleasant device to use. I've had Nokias, Sony Ericssons, Motorolas, LGs etc and I've always found the interfaces clunky and often less than intuitive but I don't get that with the iPhone.
For the record, I'm not really Apples target market either. I have no interest in owning something because it looks shiny and nice, it needs to do what I want it to do.

Ditto.
Another major plus for me is MobileMe integration. If I change contacts or appointments on the phone (or home imac) then it's replicated to to everything else that syncs within a couple of minutes.
