Eh? What are you on about now?

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Many Australians come here for a time, often as a base for an overseas trip to Europe. Fewer come here to stay than Brits go there to stay.

I don't know if I'd put "at least it's better than Afghanistan" on the tourist board posters.

In general, yes there is substantial immigration to the UK, and substantial emigration from. Why is it that educated and skilled workers are much more common in the latter than the former?

I believe the clue is in the pronounciation of 'country'

Because we are a better country at educating our people?

Best thing about the UK is the freedom of speech. Where else can we viciously slag off and ridicule the government on a public forum without fear of consequences, and

                  K. Thanks

Coming from you that's nothing less than fantastic.

It's like a tramp pissing in your pocket.

In the German office I was in last year, we had, as well as a lot of Germans, a number of English-speakers including an American, an Indian, 2 Londoners, and me. Somebody described a piece of humour as "puckish" and someone else asked what that meant. One of the German guys described it, adding that it came from Puck, in "one of Shakespeare's plays ... A Midsummer Night's Dream, wasn't it?" Someone else then added that the character was also called Robin Goodfellow.

I knew that too, but the other English-speakers didn't know any of this. A sadly accurate sign of different levels of education. Not every German could have done that, but it was noticeably not at all unexpected that some could. Ask most of us even to name a German author, never mind show some familiarity with one of his characters: I don't think it would come out well.
