I know what you are saying, seems such a backwards step but maybe that's the way things will be for a while. Call me young and naive at 30, but it's like I've spent my life progressing and progressing, then suddenly feels like a huge step back.. hard to accept I guess.
Indeed. But it could be worse.

I was with equitable life. I was staying with them until article in Telegraph by finance editor saying he had moved his money out : hardest bit was admitting he made a mistake. I followed him : luckily for me!

Here you have done nothing wrong. But you must be practical.

He made a mistake moving the money out, or made a mistake publicizing it?

Word got round that you're bending over on rate and associated agents want to have a sniff.

If anyone of them think you're a serious "low rate" contender, they'll do an overdrive push on clients "Look what you can get if take my contractor?"

He made a mistake getting into equitable in the first place! He found it hard to admit. Was tempted to hang in just cos could not own up to himself.

40 jobs applied for over the past 2 weeks.
One call to say the job had gone which was only up on jobserve for 4 hours.

              not looking good

What does that mean just out of interest ?

Button on Jobserve / CW Jobs pressed 40 times - or 40 telephone conversations with pimps about possible roles ?

Just curious really about how people are approaching the search (I'll be starting soon!)

                  "button pressed"

so you think the direct approach will yield success ?

Mate, if you want to secure a contract you need to be TALKING to clients and (spit) agents. Not filling in forms on JobServe and pressing buttons.

SELL YOURSELF (though not in rent-boy way).

WHS. With mucho bells on. In this market, by the time something hits jobswerve it's probably already gone (if it ever existed).
