The fact that we'll come together as a society every year to donate millions of pounds to Children In Need and/or Comic Relief - even in a recession.

Charities exist in other countries you know. The fact that we have to have big TV shows to remind people to donate could be interpreted as being a bad thing.

The fact that we treat every single person as an equal in this country.

No we don't. My wife has received horendous treatment since coming to Britan, despite having a perminent residency visa.

The fact that today I watched on the news the parent of that poor kid shot in Liverpool...and their words were thanking the many thousands of people who had written to them, complete strangers who had supported them for no reason other than they felt their pain.

It was the father who read out the statement and was thankful for INTERNATIONAL support.

The fact that we can get our tubes and our buses blown up one day, and we'll be there standing at that frolicking stop at 8:30am the next morning.

Same in other countries - IRAQ for example. Also the same where natural disasters occur such as earthquakes. People everywhere just get on with life. Nothing uniquely British.

The fact that I can come on here and rant my opinions down everyone neck without having the police at my door.

You can in many other countries - in fact I would say the majority of countries allow free speech.

The fact that the majority of us go to sleep tonight safe, fed, warm.

Tell that to the pensioners who have to decide whether to eat or heat. In many other countries you can go to bed safer, better fed and warmer.

The fact that a little girl goes missing on holiday and the people of this country raise millions of pounds pretty much overnight.

Whilst ignoring the thousands of others, both children and adults, who go missing in this country each year.

The fact that the majority of people in this country who in other countries would be left to suffer, in this country wont be.

Example please. There's a lot of suffering in the UK and by UK citizens.

The fact that if a person collapses in the street in this country they will get taken into hospital and looked after until they are well again - regardless of where they are from or whether they have insurance or not.

Not necessarily. If you are not from the UK you get your passport taken off you until you pay, and as you are not a national then you get didily squat to live off whilst you try and find the money to pay your hospital bill. Also many other countries have "free hospitals."

Can someone remind me what the original question was?

As always, we seem to have somewhat diverged.
'Orwell's 1984 was supposed to be a warning, not an instruction manual'. -

And the answer is: it's probably too late.

Do that here as well, don't know why.

The fact that we treat every single person as an equal in this country.

Written into the German constitution (somethng that the UK doesn't actually have)

Don't get too many shootings of children here even though there are probably more guns.

The fact that we can get our tubes and our buses blown up one day, and we'll be there standing at that frolicking stop at 8:30am the next morning.

And waiting, and waiting. I'm afraid the public transport system here is just so much better. In the town I live in (pop. approx. 150,000) there are buses, trams, and 2 type of trains. The bus I normally get runs every 15 minutes from 05:00 until 00:15 (02:15 at weekends) and during certain events they run the whole 24 hours.

The fact that I can come on here and rant my opinions down everyone neck without having the police at my door.

Are you sure about that? With the UK following the lead of the US and their Homeland security, are you sure that you are not being monitored? Remember the police now like to arrest, and try to, anyone and then use the anti-terrorism laws. Anyone remember SuS? Britain seems to becoming a 'Big Brother' country in my eyes I'm afraid

The fact that a little girl goes missing on holiday and the people of this country raise millions of pounds pretty much overnight.

Why did they raise millions of pounds? For what cause?

The fact that the majority of people in this country who in other countries would be left to suffer, in this country wont be.

Probably true for 3rd world countries but not for developed nations which is basically what we are talking about. Britain - 14% of the population live below the poverty line

The fact that if a person collapses in the street in this country they will get taken into hospital and looked after until they are well again - regardless of where they are from or whether they have insurance or not.

            Same here

              My £0.02

I live in the UK but work on the mainland. Not through choice but it's where the work is... That being said, I do enjoy the experience and am thankful for the opportunity (apart from getting up at 4:30 on a Monday morn). I've worked in many countries and have always enjoyed the experience but for me it has always been just that, an experience. I've never felt truly integrated in to another country but that's mostly about me rather than my hosts (too lazy to learn the languages. Generally I learn enough to get drunk but not enough to get laid). I've always found people to be friendly and accommodating both at home and abroad. At the weekend I live in a suburb of a city but during the week I work in a large industrial city and so I get to appreciate the benefits of both. I really struggle with the overpopulated/chav culture/they've stolen our identity etc bollux.

I LOVE living in the UK. Sure, the weather is generally carp but so what. The choice and variety of opportunity to people of means is second to none in my opinion. This coupled with the fact that we have a system in place that means none go without education or healthcare.

The UK is not overpopulated by foreigners nor is it full of benefit thieving chavs. I don't care WTF today's daily mail headline is!

If you are not taking advantages of the opportunities presented to you or are not enjoying the quality of life that's on offer, then that shows more about you than 'the state of the nation'

I realise that the above is true of many countries... I guess it's more about the person than the location. Some people like to wallow in their own misery I suppose.

Those are some of MY reasons why I'm proud to be British. You can't take any of that away from me I'm afraid.

You clearly are not proud to be British, and you clearly dont give a **** about the place or the people in it. You tret every point I made there with utter distain - saying that other countries do the same good thing doesn't take away the fact that we do it...it doesn't lesson my pride that we do it. What an odd thing to say.

Only in the UK can you make a living out of writing while getting other people to do the writing for you. It's called research. Boomed!
