Obviously, as an affected customer, hope this is true, but even if I wasn't affected, at least it shows some (small) balls.

I remember this happening in the 90's when BCCI went bust.

The then Tory govt, did fook all to help UK depositors whereas the US authorities immediately seized the US assets to ensure US depositors were fully compensated.

Had friends who were affected and spitting blood at the Tories.
Iceland, with an real economy the size of Brighton can in no way pay up for it's banking follies. It was punching way above it's weight on the global financial stage. Not just banks also in it's companies used credit to finance takeovers on the British highstreet for example. They never had any of their own money.

Now like an ant on steroids - it's been stepped on.

        The official release:
        http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/press_101_08.htm

        Landsbanki/Icesave

        2. The UK authorities expect that Landsbanki will soon be declared in default. Should that occur, the Chancellor has put in place arrangements to ensure that no retail depositor will lose any money as a result of the closure of Icesave.

When you get your money back, may I suggest the First Bank of Nigeria as a new home.

Not particularly safe, but offers 0.1% more interest than a UK bank.

I would suggest Northern Rock as all deposits 100% guaranteed !!!

I hope you get your money back from HMG guys, but I'm getting uneasy.
Can HMG really afford to guarantee every deposit in the country?
