Iceland close to reaching compensation deal for UK Icesave customers
Prime minister Geir Haarde said significant progress has now been made on compensation for foreign customers of the internet bank, which collapsed when its Icelandic parent company, Landsbanki, was nationalised last month.
"We are moving towards a solution of the Icesave dispute and assume that a temporary accord will be reached," Mr Haarde said.
Reykjavik was forced to apply for an emergency $6bn (£4.1bn) loan brokered by the IMF after its currency and banking system collapsed last month. The first $2.1bn would be provided by the IMF itself, with another $3.9bn coming from EU and Nordic countries.
However, the IMF has delayed voting on the bail-out package several times because Iceland cannot agree on how it is going to repay UK and Dutch customers of Icesave.
Iceland's foreign minister Ingibjorg Gisladottir said the state has now accepted its minimum liability of €20,887 (£18,000) for each Icesave account, after the government originally said domestic customers would be given priority. "We are isolated when all 27 EU member states agree that we have to reach an accord on Icesave," she said.
The Government's promise came hours after Björgólfur Gudmundsson, the former chairman and biggest shareholder of Landsbanki, claimed the sale of the bank's assets alone would be enough to compensate every Icesave account holder.
Mr Gudmundsson said Landsbanki's assets before it was nationalised were worth more than twice the value of deposits. The assets are now worth only 50pc of their original value, but will still be sufficient compensation for account holders, he added.
Icelandic newspapers are reporting that Landsbanki's assets are worth between $6.6bn and $8.7bn. The total value of money in Icesave accounts is $3.7bn, according to Ms Gisladottir.Comment
