That's Uri Geller done & dusted with all the spoons in the cutlery drawer now useless.
Next up: "Surrender:how British industry gave up the ghost 1952 - 2012" by Nicholas Comfort, being the sad tale of how the mighty are fallen, while all around the desert sands stretch to infinity & beyond.
Or how we went from exporting 52% of the world's motor vehicles to roughly nothing, ditto for ships, rockets, nuclear power, planes, and just about anything else you might imagine.
Managed decline, dear boy, managed decline.Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 29 July 2022, 10:21.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

Yup. It's being so cheerful that keeps me going.
This epic was purchased in January 2013, so it's been laid down for a while to mature nicely.
Alternatively I could have chosen "Road of Bones the epic seige of Kohima 1944" by Fergal Keane.Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 31 October 2020, 18:11.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

Next up: "The Great Game" by Peter Hopkins, being the story of, oddly enough, The Great Game.
Written in 1990, new preface 2006, at a time when 22 British servicemen had died in Afghanistan.
The main text is unchanged from the 1990 edition with the exception of the new preface. When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

Just finished "Snoop" by Sam Gosling, all about figuring people out from the stuff they surround themselves with.
Moderately inneresting in its way.
Just finishing* "Willing Slaves".
"The Great Game" got as far as page 6 before being put back whence it came.
"Road of Bones" much the same.
* If "finishing" might be defined as 80 pages to go.Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 18 November 2020, 12:45.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

Now reading "Never Had it So Good" by Dominic Sandbrook, purchased on Starwars Day 2013*, being "A history of Britain from Suez to The Beatles".
Another 800 page tome.
The one good thing about CV is that I can't buy any more tomes.
<hiatus>
Well it must be said that it's rather a good read all in all.
*That was the last birthday my dad had at home: 2014 was in hospital, 2015 was in a care home, poor old sod. He didn't make 2016.Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 27 September 2024, 09:43.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

"A few selected exits" Gwyn Thomas, he of the long ago HTV documentaries.
A Few Selected Exits: Amazon.co.uk: Thomas, Gwyn: 9780802313034: Books
Goodness me there's a film of it, with Doctor Lecter himself in the lead:
