One in Fifty £1 Coins Are Fakes

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7628137.stm

I have one here - although only one of the flaws highlighted by the Beeb is apparent.

The reverse and obverse are aligned correctly, and both designs are centred. However the inscription "Decus et Tutamen" around the edge isn't tall enough, and is impressed too deeply.

One major flaw, however, is that the obverse bears the date 1997, and the reverse shows a Welsh dragon. That design was only used in 1995 and 2000, and is accompanied by the Welsh inscription "Pleidiol wyf I'm gwlad" on the edge. A 1997 coin should have the three lions.

If Xeno were here I'm sure he would award you some sort of Numismatics geek points.

If they didn't keep changing the bleeding designs people might have a chance to tell if they are fake.

the forgers would have a lot more time to practice and get it right.

I do wonder about the economics of forging £1 coins.

I mean, how much do you suppose they cost to produce?

I suppose if it wasn't such a shoddy looking thing in the first place, it might actually be harder to counterfeit.

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Does it work in the vending machine? If not off to boots to get rid of it!

What do you mean you are supposed to hand it in! Excellent!

                    I once tried ram-raiding - I got £1000 of goods.

But did £1500 of damage to my car.
