What's a pound coin. I thought money only came in ten, twenty & fifty pound notes?
If it's less that twenty I tell them to keep the change

But I've had 10 pence pieces, 20 pence pieces and 50 pence pieces rejected by vending machines.......

So there are loads of fake coins out there.

This is just a kite being flown by the nuLieBore regime. It’s a test to see how people react to stories of forged notes and coins. They don’t want people holding cash. Keep an eye open for more stories like this.

AtW may be able to confirm this story; nearly 20 years ago the USSR tried a trick a little like this. One morning they decreed that certain notes would no longer be legal tender. The target was the black economy and people hording cash. It also withdrew a lot of cash from the economy to help with inflation: Monetarism Russian style.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

It claims in the HTTP Content-Type header to be UTF-8; however the actual bytes being sent for the £ character are 0xef 0xbf 0xbd

That's not ISO Latin-1, nor is it Windows 1252. In fact, I haven't got the faintest idea what it thinks it is
