    IT qualifications

I have recently started my first job which is a BA role and I am thinking the best way to progress. What IT qualifications would people recommend? I was thinking of doing a masters in something like information systems but would professional qualifications be a better investment? I currently have a Prince2 foundation qualification, Would it be worth upgrading this to practitioner, the cost is about £400.

    Thanks for your help.

In my 11 years of Contracting the only thing that has counted is experience. Not sure how much impact lots of courses etc would have.
The main thing is to be able to hit the ground running or look like you've hit the ground running and pick up the job quickly.

the answer is no. it is your first job. stick at it, get some experience under your belt. you can't really upgrade your skillset until you have a skillset.

if you are burning full of energy and can do the job in your sleep then start thinking about a plan b.

can I ask what was your first qualification in? For me a Masters really did help, but my first (actually my second) degree was in a different dicipline, sometimes getting a combination of diciplines really helps, especially if you are thinking of specialising into a specific industry e.g. a combination of IT and finance/accounting qualification will make you extra desirable in the finance industry, combination of engineering and IT will make you a good candidate for a wide variety of roles as well. A combination of business/Management and IT is also very good.

However as someone else said, experience is above all.

Personally I don't rate PRINCE2 qualifications, everyone runs their own projects slightly differently anyway and thats not too dificult to pick up in situ.

I would go for something with more substance than management process waffle, eg. I am currently reading up on CISSP, mainly to pass the time on my commute, but if I'm benched in the future I may try out the exam to get a foot in the door there.

Seriously, fair play to you. Although, I have seen firewall and user admin roles stipulating CISSP...

You may not rate it, but it is the one that employers seek, either as an essential skill, or a nice to have.
