Im not arguing anything different. Indeed, im saying it is in Russias strategic intrest to do exactly that. The question for the west is how could we/ can we stop them doing it? I dont think we can, not without putting at risk far more than we would stand to gain.

We have to stop them because it is in their nature to expand even further if we do nothing.
Sanctions and alienation should be a first resort, military action the very last, but we cannot stand by and allow their illegal and anti-democratic activities.

The missile system being deployed in eastern Europe could not stop Russian missiles, their prescence is being exploited by the Russian leadership to give themselves more power from their people.

The West on the other hand are probably using the missiles for similar reasons, i.e as political weapons.

It is all very well beating up the West and saying that the Russians are victims in all this and that we have brought all this on ourselves, but when this little Georgian conflict becomes another world war all you guilt ridden fools will run screaming to the Americans to save your sad little arses.

The shield will stop just enough missiles to spread nuclear cloud over the EU. The poles will then realize their mistake ...

But this is exactly the russian's argument. "We have to stop the west, it is in their nature to encroach further on russian infuence if we do nothing."

We arent going to go to war to try and prevent russia annexing a small chunk of land that is populated 90% by people who want to be russians anyway. Or that is at least the russian's gamble.

Nuclear disarmourment is the key, and the U.S are making the agreement to disarm by russia and themselves hang in the balance by creating a defence shield when they sould be doing the opposite by promoting good relations and further steps towards extended peace

The events are the same, only Ukraine is a greater threat than Georgia. Ukraine is aligning itself with Nato, it has a large enough population of people who are sympathetic to Russia, but it is of greater strategic importance because it houses the Russian Black sea fleet.
