We arent going to go to war to try and prevent russia annexing a small chunk of land that is populated 90% by people who want to be russians anyway. Or that is at least the russian's gamble.

So which countries have the West annexed ? If the USA had annexed Mexico I can understand your argument, but all democratic countries are independent and protected by international law. Russia is perfectly free to exert infuence on any countries near the USA if it is with the aim of friendship, trade etc. They have no right to annex them though.

... and how do you know that all of South Ossetians want to be part of Russia ? Their aim has always been independence from Georgia, in the same way that Scotland want to be independent from the UK.

Just let them have it, the same as we are letting them have Georgia !! Nobody wants war and who cares about little Ukranians. Let's only worry about it when they annex the UK.

In my view if Ukraine was invaded by Russia, then NATO would have to intervene militarily, which would mean Poland once again becoming the front for war between NATO and Russia. The US could not afford to ignore such an invasion. If the war escalated into a nuclear war then of course everyone would be involved.

If Russia is allowed to get away with invding Ukraine then the next stop would be Poland, Kazakhstan and anywhere else that is of strategic or economic value to the Russians.

If NATO defended an attack on Ukraine then it would most likely beat Russia.

The Ukraine will be the next major flashpoint between the West and Russia. Not only do you have the Nato membership in the balance, but the lease for the Sevastopol base is up in 2017 and I believe Russia isn't interested in giving it back.
