    The Catholic Poverty Trap

The Birth control battle weighs on Philippine economy.
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080818/...thcontrol_dc_1

Spooked by a precarious political and economic situation, some Philippine lawmakers are trying to pass a bill that will compel the central government to promote artificial family planning rather than solely focus on natural birth control methods supported by the Church.
Twenty-seven economists, including four former economic planning secretaries and one former budget secretary, have signed a paper supporting the bill.
Yet the proposed reproductive health bill will likely never see the light of day as the influential Catholic Church is staunchly opposed to artificial birth control as a violation of its religions tenets.
The Church has denounced the bill as "morally unacceptable" and warned politicians, particularly senators considering running for the presidency in 2010, that their stance will be remembered.

"The Catholic Church knows how to mobilize its members not to vote for anti-life politicians," said Father Melvin Castro of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines in a statement.

I'm sorry, but here is a religion that promotes poverty and starvation for millions while still demanding that they give to the church.
It's about time that the Catholic church climbed out of the dark ages and stopped forcing the majority of its congregation into peasanthood.

It annoys me when I see an Institution with the power and influence to do great good in this world, abuse the very people that need their help the most.

There was a time when this country was run by the church, from top to bottom. That period is known as the dark ages

As opposed to the atheistic communist regime of China that practices a policy of one child per family which has resulted in:

. Forced abortions, up to and including while the woman is in labour
      . Infanticide
. Disabled kids and girls being abandoned
      . A skewing of the male/female ratio

IIRC the papacy does permit vasectomy. Perhaps they should promote that.

In countries where medical treatment is way beyond the means of the poorer families, this is really not a viable option.

Abstinance. The Catholic Church also teaches celibacy before marriage. Which would certainly deal with the high number of teenage single mothers we seem to be producing in this country. It is not even clear that a high birthrate leads onto poverty. The link the otherway is clear. In poor countries where infant mortality is high there is an equally high birthrate. Families essentially produce a number of babies to ensure that at least one survives to support couples in their old age. Within Asian families you can have 3 to 4 generations living in accomodation.

It would certainly be preferable to the current system where people are encouraged to get a woman pregnant, and as a society we provide benefits to people producing babies - thereby ending up with families who are brought up on benefits, who then grow up to know nothing else and also end up on benefits.

Its easy for the Catholic church to preach abstinance, what will the priests do if the supply of choir boys runs out though ?

Fair enough. I should have said "IIRC the papacy does permit vasectomy. Perhaps they should pay for that."

Anyway, how expensive is a couple of bricks?

Nope. Anything that renders conception impossible is "evil". Have the snip and then convert would be OK though.

The teaching does actually use the word "impossible". Maybe somebody one day will argue on that basis that teaching is being misinterpreted since most forms of contraception do not render conception impossible.

This is nothing to do with the atheism of the leadership, please don't confuse the issue. This is a policy to attempt to avoid a catastrophic population explosion in an already overpopulated and overpolluted country. Your bullet points are side-effects of this policy - granted - but there should be political solutions to these problems, not just a blanket assertion that the policy in the first place was wrong or misguided. It wasn't.
