After 1992 Russia kicked all Georgians out of South Ossetia and issued the remaining population with Russian passports. Those expelled Georgians understandably want their houses and land back.
This is the end-game with the Russians annexing what was Georgian territory and manipulating the media to make it appear that Georgia is the aggressor.

There was Russians and Georgians on both sides of the South Ossetia
And there has been refugee movements on both sides. Many Russian speakers born in Georgia have been denied Georgian passports. It is only in the last two or three years that Russia has offered passports to these people.

(A similar problem exists in Estonia, Russian speakers born in Estonia are denied passports and the right to work hence why there are so many Russian speaking Estonian refugees in the UK. It's Ironic really; having an EU country practicing apartheid.)

In Georgia there have been several elections engineered by the US such as the overthrow in 2003 of Eduard Shevardnadze who gracefully resigned as president on November 23, 2003, in the bloodless Rose Revolution.

The latest fixed election was of Mikhail Saakashvili on May 22, A large avenue in the capital was named George Bush Avenue and there are numerous statutes and posters of George Bush to saviour Georgia, I think that says it all.

BBC headlines claim Russia attacked Georgia, it is only hidden in the story that you find that it was stated when Georgia made a surprise attack on South Ossetia killing 200 people.

The US and EU have double standards, they encourage independence of any state that they choose be speaks out against those who do not favour them.

The Former Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili said in an interview with the France-Presse news agency she commented on the possible reasons behind the military conflict.

"There are many Americans in Georgia training the military forces of the country and monitoring the situation. As I understand, they also supervise the strategic corridor – the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline.

The main purpose behind the conflict is the further strategic orientation of Georgia and an opportunity for the West, I mean the USA and the EU, to count on Georgia and the Caucasus in ensuring the strategic provision of oil".

Professor Gerhard Mangott, from the Department of political science at the University of Innsbruck, shared his opinion on who stands to gain from the military escalation in the conflict zone.

"The military assault in South Ossetia was launched deliberately, and the question is by whom? Definitely, not by Russia, as it’s not in the country’s interests,” he said.

MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti) - Over 1,000 civilians have been killed as the result of an attack by Georgia on the capital of its breakaway republic of South Ossetia, the North Ossetian nationalities minister said Friday.

"According to the South Ossetian information and press committee, the number of fatalities is estimated, according to preliminary information, at over 1,000," Teimuraz Kasayev said.

North Ossetia is part of Russia.

Georgia launched a major offensive early Friday morning using tanks, combat aircraft, heavy artillery and infantry.

Earlier Colonel Igor Konashenkov, an aide to the commander of the Russian Ground Forces, said about 10 Russian peacekeepers were killed and 30 wounded in the conflict zone.

The Russian Transportation Ministry's press service said Friday that Moscow would cut air links with Tbilisi.

Georgian military forces have begun retreating from the capital, Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian information and press committee said.

"Using grenade launchers South Ossetian local defense forces are destroying Georgian tanks. According to eyewitnesses they the tanks are on fire throughout the city," the committee said in a statement.

The statement also said that most of the city had been devastated by the Georgian military attack, which left the hospital destroyed and the republic's university on fire.

If they want their land back why are the Georgians using artillery on civilians killing hundreds and destroying civilian buildings? Seems counterproductive...

Georgia in US-financed arms race for war on Abkhazia, South Ossetia
Georgia is preparing for a US-financed war against Abkhazia and South Ossetia. That is what the country's military build-up reveals, according to a leading journalist and political analyst from Geneva. Since the current regime took power, Georgian military spending has effectively increased by over forty times and now has the highest growth-rate of any country in the world.

Who cares, it's not as if it's affecting us is it?
