New Lie proposed this in 1997 under Frank Field but as soon as they gained power they dumped the idea because it was unpopular with their core voters. This is the usual spin aimed at outmanouvreing the Tories that will be met with no action. Only the Tories ever take the tough and unpopular decisions are necessary.
Apparently it's the same as the Tories plan, only different...
Cunning... Incapacity Benefit won't be abolished until 2013, well into the next Tory government. So the Tories cop the blame and New Lie get back in again.
This has got nothing to do with ‘helping’ people get back to work; it all to do with government spending cuts. They have identified the sick as a group that do the least to defend themselves and been perusing a vilification campaign against them for ages to sell it to the public. All that is going to happen is that they move from sickness benefits to job seekers benefits or whatever they are called at the time. Not one of them will be helped to find work. The result is that health care and policing costs will rocket.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

This is long overdue. People that are longterm sick should be checked to verify that they actually are.
There is no way that all of those 3 million approx. people are all genuine. If they go onto jobseekers allowance then at least we will have a more accurate unemployed figure and those people will get less benefits and will also have show that they are seeking work.
Many of those people may even disappear out of the claimant figures because many will be fraudulent(eg: doing black-market jobs, dead or multiple claimants).
I think you'll find 'stress' and things like clinical depression are real, physical illnesses and not the same thing as a 'stressful' day when someone's shouting at you to meet a deadline or when you feel a bit 'depressed' on a Monday morning.
It's all well and good for healthy people to put the boot into those on long term sickness benefits but just remember that in a quick twist of fate, it could easily be you.
Sure, there's bound to be a few people playing the system but it's probably better just to accept that as a consequence of having that safety net for everyone else.
