That's just crazy advice - are you sure you've been there? All of the big data centres are in Alice Springs - it's the hot, arid environment, cuts down on A/C bills.
I went for a contract in Siberia once and then I saw the datacenter on TV and promptly turned it down. It was in the middle of nowhere, not even a town, just miles and miles of tundra. A friend worked in one of these places once with some Russians and said they're a bit strange, especially when it came to farting. Brits tend to find it a bit funny and will pop one off now and then at work. The Russians would go outside in the minus weather. I personally would rather tulip my pants then go outside in that weather...
“Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.”
expat where did you work / live for those 15 years?
I'm keen to leave this place too.... just biding my time earning my money while I can. Long term I think Canada has a great story. Oz is a nice thought but too far while I wouldn't mind working in Dubai for a couple of years too.
I lived in France most of the time. Although I don't now want to spend my life there, I still miss some things about it, and the period made me think about what I want in where I live, and what you find in different places.
What I'd do if younger would be different. Real expat work (i.e.3rd world) can be fun but it's no longer attractive to me now. Some of the classic destinations are just no longer available to me: I'm too old for Australia and have just slipped over the NZ limit. Canada is still possible because of the fluent French.
But I'd be more likely to do Europe now. For a start I have come to appreciate the diversity and the depth of culture, and the ease of finding a change of scene.
Remember that you may be able to improve your life by living somewhere else in the UK.
I need another 6 months work experience for my Oz visa (no IT degree...) and I'm starting the process. Once it comes through you won't see me for dust.
Hi DiscoStu,
sorry to hijack but im wondering if you have some advice.
Me and the wife want to go to aus for a year to work and play... We both have good degrees and she has a masters.
Whats our best/quickest option to go out there for a year?

They are not as shy as you think. The farts freeze immediately upon exit and the Russkies collect them and keep them in a tin in the fridge.
Never accept a biscuit from a Russian, if the biscuit tin has just come from the fridge.
