So why is it an urban myth (your words) that you shouldn't drink alcohol with antibiotics?Last edited by sasguru; 23 April 2008, 10:23.Hard Brexit now!

I've drank alcohol too while being on amoxicillin. I only know it worked because I didn't get an infection or my infection cleared up, plus there is no evidence the amoxicillin interacts with alcohol.Originally posted by sasguru View PostHow do you know the antibiotics worked?
I do however know that some people have adverse reactions to amoxicillin which means they can throw up or worse.
I was prescribed mitronazdole for a week and refused to take it past 5 days because I wanted to go out and party. I was young and didn't care for the words "antibiotic resistant infections" ..........."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment

If only Apple made antibiotics, you'd be able to take them with alcohol and illicit drugs to your hearts contentThe court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.
But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”Comment

Too many confounding factors. It could have cleared up of its own accord or because of something else you did. Can't really know without a control group.Originally posted by SueEllen View Post. I only know it worked because I didn't get an infection or my infection cleared up,.....

Apparently alcohol may increase the effectiveness of some antibiotics, and only in chronic drinkers will there be a decrease.
I like the phrasing:
Only (a) few classes of antibiotics should be avoided when drinking alcohol.
So, it looks possible then that you just need to avoid
Metronidazole, Tinidazole – the side-effects include flushing, breathlessness, headache, increased or irregular heart rate, low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting.
furazolidone (Furoxone),
griseofulvin (Grisactin),
Antimalarial Quinacrine (Atabrine)…
So most of us can continue drinking.

Just carried on looking at other links - NHS Direct, Mayo Clinic, and they confirm the above. Except the mayo clinic also says that "trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) — should not be mixed with alcohol because this may result in a more severe reaction"
And that's the one I'm on. Funny that the NHS Direct site says no known interaction.
Now what do I do. I hate the internet, it's so confusing. But I would have thought the mayo clinic would have been fairly authoritative.

Can someone on a UK site check the document on this link and see what it says. I'm not allowed to see it, being a johnny foreigner.Last edited by NotAllThere; 23 April 2008, 11:46.Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!Comment
