have fun on your binge drinking escapism holiday

I live in Oz now but i am english. my aussie girlfriend and i watched a program about binge drinking in the UK on TV a few days ago. we are having an ongoing "discussion" about past binge drinking and weekend drug benders. she thinks i have been damaged by it - memory, etc. my point is she didn't know me before drinking and drugs, so how can she comment. my other defence is that i remember the important things i need to for work, so what's the problem?

i enjoyed working hard coding C++ on the trading floor, then friday night and several of us younguns would drink to destruction. often end up in a club at closing time and leave in the morning after several pills. grab a bag of weed in camden on the way home and spend saturday afternoon in the pub trying to get back to normal. i loved it and i would do it again if i wasn't too old. binge drinking is great if you're not an arse who causes trouble. it's when the madness happens that takes you out of normality. it's like going on holiday from the boredom of the week. London escapism that aussies (that have never left Oz) cannot relate to.

Do what thou wilt, shall be the whole of the law
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The antibiotics I'm currently taking don't interact with alcohol. You can check yours on this website.

On the other hand, the other drugs I've been prescribed make me feel slightly drunk all day, and so I'm not drinking at the moment.

Urban myth as far as I am concerned. Found on the Internet:

Yes, they should be careful consuming alcohol while taking antibiotics. It has a harsh reaction with alcohol that will cause them to puke all night long if you drink large amount of alcohol. Although I have a friend who claims that is not true. He has been taking antibiotics and drinks fairly regularly.

I am with the friend, never made me puke, certainly not when drinking in moderation. Depends on the drug and the person I would think though, probably best not to chance it if you are not a risk taker.

Dr Kane is in the house! Get you medical advice here folks but be warned it may fly in the face of conventional wisdom and just a few years of medical best practise.

I like the fact that you edited my original post to fit your statement. And I am scheduled to start a PhD next year so am not a Dr yet, girlfriend is though.

No urban myth. It depends on the drug (and of course on the person). Some antibiotics have no known interaction with alcohol, others do. There are many different antibiotics available - different chemicals that act in different ways.

I never edited anything. As a research task for your phd then could you find us another snippet of 'fact' off the internet that refutes conventional wisdom. Start with "The earth is flat cause someone on the internet said so society" and work from there would be my suggestion.
