I think this is bizzarre: they say most are better off with credits and allowances etc., and maybe that's true I don't know. But for NL who typify spin and presentation over substance to misjudge the reaction to this is amazing. Do they not get that people don't understand allowances and credits, and think the amount of tax they pay is only the headline rate of income tax?

They should increase incentive and give low paid back some pride by having no tax up to at least 15k and get rid of all the tax credits and other costly to administer benefits.

Instead there will be some incentive destroying fudge with more tax credits and/or a higher minimum wage that loads the costs onto business and indirectly taxes us all via higher prices.

Any tax reduction that is not based on a reduction in cost of the state is a hollow sham.

I agree. Personally I'd like to see no tax on up to minimum wage, and no CT for small business. The former would make low paid jobs more attractive to benefits scroungers, and the latter would encourage enterprise.

(And if a few IT contractors are better off, that's a small price to pay).

I strongly believe the reason that he did it was to catch out contractors paying themselves low salaries. Remember also that he increased small companies' corporation tax at the same time as announcing this measure.

His vindictiveness is now coming back to 'bite' him.

Dunno about catching contractors out. but GB always was a sneaky taxman. Take a look at the dividend tax credit.. I wondering how I can establish my company abroad - like the Isle of Man - and still work on contracts here.

Too right. I'm "only" on £12k a year and I'll certainly be worse off what with a 76L tax code also. I'm furious.
