On top of that, there are the campaign games (North Africa 1941-1943, say), where a lot is pre-written for you, but you select a force to take with you through the campaign. After each scenario within the campaign you will get more points (the amount depending on how you did) to buy reinforcements, repair existing units or upgrade existing units.
If real time rather than turn based is your bag, then I recommend Close Combat - Cross of Iron. There's also a modern version of this called Close Combat - Modern Tactics.
