Well, at least it stimulated conversation. Yes, supermarkets are a problem. I don't believe deterrents are working and I do believe you have to take alcohol out of the hands of people who can't control themselves. It may be a bit on the 'classist' side but my assumption is, by making alcohol unaffordable in general, middle classes and above will still be able to afford it. I think though, and I could be wrong, middle class people drinking wine at home don't tend to kick the shit out of people in the street.

Oh yeah, my tax changes would be ring fenced for the police and the NHS...
      Older and ...well, just older!!

Identify and fix the negative elements of modern living which are causing people to drink to excess, thus preventing the next generation adopting it as their own mantra.

Or if the above is too tricky or expensive, use lots of Dirty Harry's, Judge Dredds, ED-209's, and RoboCops to give 'em a good pasting.

the problem is the licensing hours

go across to the mainland where pubs are open until the wee hours and you will see people happily drinking one pint per hour all night and being fine

in the uk because of the 11 oclock rule, people have to drink as much as they can as fast as they can before last orders

granted, even if the licensing laws are relaxed this is going to take a generation to get people out of the drink as much as you can in three hours mentality but it is the only way

          Milan.
The licensing laws were relaxed. The problem we have stems fron the attitude to alcohol. In Europe people tend to drink with food and drink for pleasure of taste, and hence get less drunk. Here the objective is to get as trollied as possible on the most noxious vile liquids, eating is deemed a disadvantage. The alcopops have made the situation worse as the distinction between drink and soda blurs.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

            Wot Bagpuss says.

It does annoy me that anyone who drinks 4 pints or more is branded with the same label as the aftershots-swilling, @rse bearing gimps that blight our towns on a weekend.

4 pints of quality beer in a mature, relaxed environment is a binge? Like fook it is.

I take it you're a binge drinker then?

It's worse than that, Shimano105. The official government definition of a binge is 4 or more units in one sitting. For any decent beer that is less than 2 pints.

If supermarkets can't sell you two packs of aspirin at the same time, it's logical they can't sell you more than 6 cans or one bottle of wine. Take that, socialising!

I don't see it as binge drinking, I see it as making up for the poor bastards who can only make it out for a few beers once a month.

Someone's got to keep the pubs in business!

The problem is that most of them have nothing to lose. If they are working and get convicted of disorderly behaviour then they should run the risk of losing their jobs. They have no sense of responsibility. Even rich kids who are spoilt by their parents have nothing to lose. Take them off welfare and/or make them or their parents responsible.
